The USA opened their CONCACAF Group C campaign against northern rivals Canada. The US were stacked with their more experienced players which allowed them to control the game.
The United States scored just 15 minutes in when Landon Donovan sent a through ball to the feet of JOzy Altidore who struck the ball under the Canadian keeper to make it 1-0 USA.
The second goal came in the 62nd minute when Jozy Altidore curled the ball around the Canadian defense and was whacked home by Clint Dempsey. 2-0
The Canadians had their best chance of the game when a shot looked to be rising into the top corner only to have it slapped away for a corner by American keeper Tim Howard.
The Americans looked very calm throughout the match and controlled the tempo very nicely. If they had this line-up against Spain over the weekend, surely the match would not have been so one-sided. The squad that appeared on the field for tonight's match-up got the job done and showed that the US have the ability to win this tournament. Their closest and toughest opponents both won their openers 5-0 in Mexico and Costa Rica. Mexico and Costa Rica will meet this Sunday in the group finale. If one of those two teams were to meet the States in knock-rounds, be assured the match will be exciting.
