Real Madrid Ends Ponferradina Dream

In the Round of 32 of the Copa Del Rey (Spanish King’s Cup), Real Madrid faced Ponferradina of Spain’s third division. It was a two-legged tie where the reigning Copa champions were firmly in control throughout.
The first game ended 2-0 to Real Madrid away at Ponferradina a week ago with goals from Callejon and Ronaldo. Today’s game ended 5-1 for the home side with Callejon (2), Sahin, Varane, and Joselu with the honors.
In both games, Madrid played at a slower pace but at the same time with a high level of intelligence. Their passing game was there as they created chances at an easier level.
Ponferradina had roughly 4,000 fans at the game in Madrid earlier today. Most of Madrid’s La Liga opponents do not receive that much support. The loyal division 3 fans did receive a gift which was the sweetly curled shot past Antonio Adan by Acoran Reyes in the 54th minute of the match.
Madrid were without Ramos, Albiol, Marcelo, Coentrao, Higuain, Arbeloa, Alonso, and Ronaldo for today’s second leg. Instead, players like Altintop, Sahin, Casado, Joseulu, Nacho, and Granero were given the chance to shine. All of these players impressed as they played a strong game.
Madrid will find out who their opponents are after today’s and tomorrow’s games. Now, there is an international break in Spain for the holiday/New Year time.
