Real Madrid hosted lowly Levante in a game where they expected to dominate from start to finish months after demolishing them at the same stadium 8-0 in a Copa Del Rey (Spanish Cup) game.
Real Madrid scored two first half goals through Karim Benzema (6) and Ricardo Carvalho (41). The game did not have any goals in the second half but was wnough to give Madrid the full three points to cut Barcelona's lead down to two ahead of them in the title race.
Barcelona played host to Athletic Bilbao with David Villa wasting little time to put the home side in front with a goal in the 4th minute.
The visitors grabbed an equalizer at the 50th minute through a penalty kick by Iraola.
The game would not end in a second straight 1-1 draw for Barcelona as their mini hero Lionel Messi once again proved to be the heart and soul of the team when he scored the winner 12 minutes from time at the 78th minute, allowing Barca to regain a five point lead atop the standings.
Real Madrid next play away at Deportivo La Coruna whom they defeated 6-1 at home the first time they met in Madrid. Barcelona will visit RCD Mallorca whom they shared the spoils with in a 1-1 draw. Both games will be exciting with each side hoping for the other giant to slip up. Real Madrid will have to defeat Barcelona at home if they truly wish to make a statement and earn the right to win the La Liga trophy.
